U Hotel Group began with a simple idea: small hotels can have big character. Before the brand was officially born in 2018, our founders successfully ran two independent boutique properties — each with its own charm, each deeply connected to its neighbourhood. From those beginnings came a shared vision: to create spaces that reflect their communities, not just exist within them.
In 2018, U Boutique Hotel Wellington and U Residence Hotel Wellington were launched — two distinct experiences united by a belief in authentic local hospitality and modern design. Both properties quickly gained recognition for their intimate scale, personal service, and sense of place in the heart of New Zealand’s capital. U Suites, our vacation rental arm was also launched in 2018 offering managed apartments within Wellington’s City Centre.
With growing guest loyalty and recognition, the collection expanded in 2019 with the addition of U Studios Paraparaumu and U Studios Masterton — welcoming travellers to New Zealand’s stunning Kāpiti Coast and the Wairarapa region. Each destination reaffirmed our philosophy: great stays come from genuine local engagement and thoughtful comfort.
In 2023, Urban Lounge Sleepery Rotorua redefined the way travellers experience shared and private accommodation — a fresh, social lodging concept designed for the modern explorer. That same spirit of innovation inspired The Fort Timaru in 2024, combining heritage character with contemporary style on South Canterbury’s scenic coast.
Looking forward, our journey continued with Urban Lounge Sleepery Carterton and W1@Bangkoknoi Hotel joining the collection in 2026 — marking U Hotel Group’s first international destination in Thailand.
